SEMI released an online mid-year overall OEM semiconductor equipment forecast report on the 14th, predicting that the global semiconductor manufacturing equipment market will grow by 34% in 2021 to reach 95.3 billion U.S. dollars, and it is expected to reach a new high in 2022, surpassing the 100 billion U.S. dollar mark.

SEMI China Taiwan President Cao Shilun pointed out that this wave of growth is mainly driven by semiconductor manufacturers' continuous investment in long-term growth-related fields, which in turn drives the expansion of the semiconductor front-end and back-end equipment market.

From a regional perspective, South Korea, Taiwan, and China are expected to remain among the top three in terms of equipment spending in 2021. Among them, South Korea tops the list with its strong memory recovery momentum and substantial investment in advanced logic and foundry processes. The equipment market in Taiwan, China is expected to return to its leading position next year. Other regional markets are also expected to grow in the next two years.

From the perspective of equipment types, the expenditure on fab equipment (including wafer processing, fab facilities and mask equipment) is expected to increase by 34% in 2021, reaching a record high of US$81.7 billion, and it is also expected to achieve 6% in 2022 Growth, the market size exceeds US$86 billion.

Foundry and logic processes, which account for more than half of the total sales of fab equipment, benefit from the strong demand for advanced technology in global industrial digitalization. In 2021, they will increase by 39% year-on-year, and total expenditures will reach 45.7 billion U.S. dollars. The growth is expected to continue until 2022, and the investment in foundry and logic equipment will increase by 8%.

NAND and DRAM manufacturing equipment is driven by the substantial demand for memory chips and storage devices, and total expenditures continue to rise. Among them, DRAM equipment will soar by 46% in 2021, and the total amount will exceed 14 billion U.S. dollars; the NAND equipment market will also increase by 13% in 2021, reaching 17.4 billion U.S. dollars, and will continue to grow by 9% in 2022 to 18.9 billion U.S. dollars.

In addition, driven by the application of advanced packaging technology, the expenditure on assembly and packaging equipment will climb to US$6 billion in 2021, an increase of 56%, and will continue to increase slightly by 6% in 2022. The semiconductor test equipment market will grow by 26% in 2021 to reach 7.6 billion U.S. dollars. In 2022, there will be a 6% growth in 2022, fueled by demand for 5G and high-performance computing (HPC) applications.
